Giants Have Less Than 48 Hours From Finale to 53-Man Roster Deadline

The Giants close out their preseason Friday night against the Jets, and the roster clock starts almost immediately after. The NFL's deadline to cut down to a 53-man roster is 6 p.m. ET Sunday — less than 48 hours after kickoff.

Friday's game is the Giants' third and final preseason contest, set for 7:30 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium, according to the team's official 2026 schedule. It's the last chance for players fighting for roster spots to make their case on tape before decisions are finalized.

The cutdown deadline itself is unusually tight this year. Teams normally have until the Tuesday after the final preseason weekend to trim rosters to 53 players. This year, the NFL moved that deadline up to Sunday, Aug. 30, at 6 p.m. ET — two days earlier than the traditional cutoff — a change first reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero in May. Giants.com's Matt Citak noted the compressed window in an Aug. 25 story previewing the finale, writing that "less than 48 hours later, some big decisions will have to be made."

A handful of roster spots remain unsettled heading into Friday. "We're certainly not certain about what we want to do yet, yet I wouldn't say it's all up in the air either," coach John Harbaugh told reporters Monday, Aug. 24. "There's probably some key points, some clutch areas where we just have to make decisions still with three, four, five decisions that have to be made."
