Giants at Dolphins: Roster bubble battles headline Saturday's preseason game
The Giants haven't decided who plays Saturday. For a handful of players fighting for a roster spot, that decision matters more than the score.
The Giants play the Dolphins Saturday at 4 p.m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium, the teams' only preseason meeting before Miami's home opener. NFL Network is carrying the game nationally, with the Giants' broadcast also airing locally on WNBC 4 New York and Telemundo 47 (WNJU).
Miami Herald Dolphins reporter Barry Jackson confirmed the kickoff time and national broadcast plans when the schedule was finalized:
Coach John Harbaugh said Thursday night the coaching staff hadn't yet decided which players will play, and would lean on film from that day's joint practice with Miami to make the call.
"We'll have that conversation tonight," Harbaugh said. "Certain guys, I'm sure, got enough work. Certain guys, we'll have to talk about what we want to do. I think we'll decide tonight."
Harbaugh made the same points on camera after Thursday's practice:
Big Blue View's preseason coverage projected that few, if any, starters would play Saturday, based on those comments. That leaves the game largely to players still working out roster spots.
Offensive line. Evan Neal has spent camp with the third team. Big Blue View reports that if Francis Mauigoa or Josh Ezeudu sit out Saturday, Neal would be in line for extended snaps to make his case. Both linemen carry questions into the weekend: Mauigoa left Thursday's practice with a stinger, and Ezeudu, who moved up to work with the first team in Mauigoa's place, left practice limping. Backup center Lucas Patrick has also missed camp time with a knee issue, opening reps for Bryan Hudson and Jake Kubas. New York has little margin behind its starters after trading backup guard Daniel Faalele to Jacksonville this week — a move PFF flagged in its 2026 offensive line rankings, which dropped the Giants to 23rd from ninth.
Cornerback. Paulson Adebo intercepted a pass in Thursday's practice but has continued taking second-team reps, a rotation Big Blue View said raises questions about whether he has a starting job locked up. Deonte Banks, Greg Newsome, Colton Hood, Art Green and Korie Black are also in the mix, and how the group is deployed Saturday should say something about where that competition stands.
Quarterback. Jake Haener signed with the Giants this week, days after Brandon Allen threw two second-half interceptions in the preseason opener against Minnesota. The Giants are unlikely to keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, so a strong outing from Haener Saturday could put him ahead of Allen for the practice-squad spot. Jaxson Dart played the first two series in that Minnesota opener, per CBS Sports, though Harbaugh's Thursday comments leave his workload Saturday unclear.
Receiver is the one position group that already looks settled. Malachi Fields' hot summer earned him a spot on PFF's Week 1 Rookie Team, and that head start matters with Malik Nabers, still working back from a torn ACL, not expected to play Saturday. The Giants have said they're hopeful Nabers will be ready for the Sept. 13 opener against Dallas, though he hasn't committed to a return date.
Najee Harris, who signed with the team last week, got his first practice reps Thursday and nearly scored from the goal line in team drills. Harbaugh said playing Harris wasn't necessarily the plan going in, but that the back looked ready. Whether Harris plays Saturday hasn't been announced.
The joint practice pointed to a defense that's ahead of the offense right now. Chauncey Golston had three sacks, part of a Giants pass rush that combined for at least six sacks and several more pressures; Kayvon Thibodeaux, Abdul Carter, Brian Burns and Dru Phillips all got home as well — Burns ranked No. 14 on the NFL's Top 100 list this week, the highest ever for a Giants defender. Full breakdown of Thursday's practice. "It was ferocious," Harbaugh said of the pass rush. "It was ferocious. That's practice, so you've got to come do it in the game. But I was impressed with it."
Giants.com's highlight reel from the practice shows that pressure up close:
Multiple fights also broke out during the session — covered in detail in a separate GiantsGator report. The NFL had not fined either team as of Friday. The league did fine the Cowboys and Saints $500,000 apiece for a separate joint-practice brawl earlier in the week, according to the league's confirmation, posted by ESPN's Adam Schefter:
The Giants close the preseason Aug. 28 against the Jets at MetLife Stadium, officially a Jets home game. The 53-man roster is due to the league by 6 p.m. ET Sunday, Aug. 30 — which is what makes Saturday's snap counts worth watching as closely as the score.
