Giants Sign Malik Harrison to 53-Man Roster, Add Dawuane Smoot and Josh Gesky to Practice Squad
Harrison had used all three of his practice-squad elevations in September. His signing fills the roster spot left open when Chauncey Golston went to injured reserve.
The Giants signed linebacker Malik Harrison from their practice squad to the 53-man roster Tuesday and added veteran outside linebacker Dawuane Smoot to the practice squad.
Harrison takes the roster spot the Giants left open when they placed defensive lineman Chauncey Golston on injured reserve Oct. 10.
Harrison was elevated for the Giants' first three games, on Sept. 12, Sept. 21 and Sept. 26. NFL rules cap standard elevations at three per player in a season, so a 53-man roster contract was the only way to play him again. He played 56 special teams snaps in those three games and recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff of the Week 3 win over Tennessee. He has not played since.
Harrison, a 2020 third-round pick of the Ravens, has played in 90 games, with 43 starts, for Baltimore, Pittsburgh and the Giants. He was limited in Thursday's practice with a groin injury.
Smoot, a 2017 third-round pick of the Jaguars, has 27 sacks in 127 regular-season games with Jacksonville and Buffalo. He joins the practice squad of a defense that has lost Golston and Brian Burns to injured reserve.
On Wednesday, the Giants signed offensive lineman Josh Gesky, who played at Illinois, to the practice squad and released defensive lineman C.J. Ravenell from the practice squad.
Friday's injury report will list game statuses for Sunday's game against the Saints.
