Giants Cut Eight Players Saturday Ahead of 53-Man Deadline
The waived players can be claimed through Monday's 1 p.m. ET deadline, with the Giants holding the fifth priority spot in the claiming order.
The New York Giants released eight players Saturday, getting a head start on trimming their roster to the NFL-mandated 53-man limit ahead of Sunday's 6 p.m. ET deadline.
The team released cornerback Ugo Amadi, tight end Josiah Deguara, defensive lineman Leki Fotu, wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins and offensive lineman Brenden Jaimes outright, according to Giants.com. Running back Damon Bankston, linebacker Anfernee Orji and wide receiver Kobe Prentice were waived.
Hodgins, in his third-plus season with the Giants after joining the team midway through 2022, caught 10 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown last season. Bankston, an undrafted rookie, ran for 62 yards on 11 carries in Friday's preseason-ending win over the Jets. The Giants signed running back Najee Harris last week.
Prentice had been with the team for less than a week, signed after Calvin Austin III went on injured reserve.
Coach John Harbaugh told reporters more cuts are coming. "We're in the process of that right now. We'll make a few here in the next hour or two. And then tomorrow we'll still have some. We won't be finished today," Harbaugh said, per Giants.com.
The Giants' roster stood at 83 players following Saturday's moves, according to Giants.com. Every NFL team must reach 53 players by Sunday's deadline.
Players who don't make the roster can be claimed on waivers through 1 p.m. ET Monday; the Giants hold the fifth priority claiming spot. Teams may then build 17-man practice squads.
New York opens the regular season Sept. 13 at home against the Dallas Cowboys.
