NFL Insider Garafolo Floats Garoppolo as Possible Giants QB Option
Mike Garafolo said Wednesday on ESPN's "Big Day with Peter Schrager" that he wouldn't be surprised by Giants discussions with free-agent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, a day after coach John Harbaugh said the team plans to add a passer.
NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo said Wednesday that he "would not be surprised if there's some discussion" between the Giants and free-agent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
"My feel is that this would be one of the right situations for Jimmy Garoppolo here," Garafolo said on ESPN's "Big Day with Peter Schrager," according to a transcript posted by Heavy.com. "So, would not be surprised if there's some discussion regarding him."
Garafolo's comments came the same day New York Post reporter Ryan Dunleavy wrote on X that Garoppolo is "a very real name to keep an eye on in the backup QB market" for the Giants, citing his own reporting for the Post. ESPN's Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler also listed Garoppolo, along with Mason Rudolph and J.J. McCarthy, among possible options in a Wednesday morning story.
Garoppolo, who turns 35 in November, is an unrestricted free agent. His contract with the Rams, where he backed up Matthew Stafford the past two seasons, expired in March. He attempted no passes in three appearances last season and hasn't started a game since Jan. 5, 2025. The Rams have since drafted Ty Simpson and elevated Stetson Bennett IV as their backup options.
Harbaugh said Wednesday the Giants will plan on doing that, absolutely regarding adding a quarterback, and that "all options are open" on a trade, but named no target. Neither Harbaugh nor the Giants have commented on Garoppolo specifically. Garafolo, Dunleavy and the ESPN insiders were each describing their own read of the market, not reporting confirmed talks.
