Giants Sign Haener and Martin, Waive Miller, Host Najee Harris
The Giants moved on from running back Dante Miller after a groin injury and worked out a four-time 1,000-yard rusher the same day.
The Giants signed quarterback Jake Haener and linebacker Chandler Martin and waived running back Dante Miller with an injury designation on Monday, the team announced. Free agent running back Najee Harris visited the team the same day, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. Harris had not signed as of Monday night.
Miller sustained a groin injury, the Giants said. SI's Giants Country reported he was hurt covering a punt in the second half of Saturday's 13-10 preseason loss to Minnesota; ClutchPoints reported the injury occurred at practice. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, cited by Heavy, reported only that Miller was hurt in recent days without specifying the setting.
Coach John Harbaugh discussed the injury Sunday.
We'll see with a soft-tissue, groin type thing, how that turns out. That's about the only thing right now.
Miller had five carries for 14 yards and three kickoff returns for 69 yards against the Vikings, according to SI's Giants Country and the team's game record. He had been with the Giants since 2024, per the team, and spent much of that span on the practice squad, Heavy reported.
Harbaugh said Harris "looks good" but that "it will be a process" before the team reaches a decision, ClutchPoints reported Monday.
Harris, 28, was a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021 and rushed for at least 1,000 yards in each of his four seasons there, according to Pro Football Reference, which lists 1,200 yards in 2021, 1,034 in 2022, 1,035 in 2023 and 1,043 in 2024. Pro Football Reference credits him with 4,373 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns in 71 games, along with 183 receptions for 1,174 yards. SI's Chargers site reported he tore his Achilles tendon in Week 3 of the 2025 season against Denver; Pro Football Reference lists three games and 61 rushing yards for him that year.
The Giants' backfield also includes Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., Devin Singletary and Eric Gray, per the team's roster. Skattebo is working back from the ankle injury that ended his 2025 season and had four carries for 19 yards Saturday, according to the team's training camp tracker.
Haener, 27, becomes the fourth quarterback on the roster behind Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston and Brandon Allen, according to a Field Level Media report. Pro Football Reference lists him as a fourth-round pick of New Orleans in 2023, No. 127 overall, out of Fresno State, with eight games, one start, and 18 completions on 39 attempts for 226 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Field Level Media reported the Saints released him in January, the Chiefs waived him May 4, and he worked out for the Giants in late July. NFL Network first reported the signing.
Martin signed a one-year contract, according to a Field Level Media report. The Giants said he entered the league as an undrafted rookie out of Memphis and appeared in three games with Baltimore last season. League transaction records show he signed with the Ravens in May 2025, spent the season on the practice squad, and signed a two-year contract with Philadelphia in March before being waived in June. Heavy and SI's Giants Country have both described him as a special teams standout in Baltimore.
Separately, the Giants placed defensive back Sam Webb on the reserve/retired list Aug. 16, per the team's transaction log. Webb signed with the team Aug. 13 and played 14 defensive snaps and three special teams snaps against the Vikings, recording two tackles, SI's Giants Country reported. Neither Webb nor the team has given a reason for the decision.
The team's transaction log also shows the Giants signed cornerback Ugo Amadi and safety JT Woods this month, released cornerback David Long Jr. and defensive lineman Sam Roberts, and waived cornerbacks D.J. James and Jarrick Bernard-Converse with injury designations.
The Giants play at Miami on Saturday in their second preseason game.
