Nagy says Giants have finished installing their offense
The coordinator said he told Jaxson Dart to play to his own strengths. Dart took 87 percent of his dropbacks from shotgun as a rookie and has worked under center throughout camp.
New York Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said Tuesday that the team has finished installing its offense, two weeks after saying it was about halfway through.
"We were probably halfway through, maybe just past halfway through the installs. We're now through all of them," Nagy said after practice at the team's facility in East Rutherford, N.J., according to a transcript posted by the team. "What's happened now is they're able to kind of see the foundation of this offense and where that starts. ... Now we can start saying, okay, we see now what you do well."
Nagy told reporters on Aug. 11 that the Giants were halfway through both their run and pass installs.
Asked whether second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart still asks him about Patrick Mahomes, Nagy said the questions have largely stopped.
"Most quarterbacks will ask those questions, but we want to make it real clear from the beginning that Jaxson's going to be Jaxson. Whatever your strengths are, we better maximize that, and he's got a hell of a lot of strengths."
Nagy worked under Andy Reid in Kansas City in two stints and was the Chiefs' offensive coordinator last season. Coach John Harbaugh hired him in February.
Dart has taken an increased number of snaps under center in training camp. As a rookie he took 87 percent of his dropbacks from shotgun and 46 from under center, according to PFF data cited by Giants Wire. PFF lists 414 total dropbacks for Dart in 2025.
Dart's average time to throw as a rookie was 3.08 seconds, ninth-longest among the 43 quarterbacks PFF graded in 2025. He took a sack on 23 percent of his pressured dropbacks, which ranked 34th, and PFF graded his passing 64.2, also 34th. He took 35 sacks and completed 63.7 percent of his passes in 14 games and 12 starts, according to Pro Football Reference.
Dan Duggan of The Athletic reported on July 29, the first day of camp, that Dart spent much of practice under center. He wrote in early August that Harbaugh and Nagy have challenged Dart to run a more traditional offense.
"It's been something that we've really pushed and really got a ton of reps at this offseason," Dart said of the under-center work.
In the Giants' preseason opener, a 13-10 loss to Minnesota on Aug. 15, Dart played 14 snaps. David Syvertsen of Big Blue Interactive charted seven under center and seven from shotgun, and wrote that every pass came from the shotgun and all but one run came from under center. Bob Folger of Giants Country wrote that none of the under-center snaps produced a play-action throw.
Dart finished that game 3 of 4 for 26 yards with a touchdown and a 131.2 passer rating, with six dropbacks and two sacks. The touchdown came on a scramble to his left, to wide receiver Malachi Fields.
Nagy referred to that play Tuesday when asked about the pressure on a play caller working with a second-year quarterback.
"The play wasn't open, and so he turned it into a scramble and a beautiful, spectacular play. He made that look like a good play call in the newspaper, but really the play call per se didn't work."
Nagy calls the plays on a staff with two other former coordinators, passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Callahan and senior offensive assistant Greg Roman.
Asked what fans would notice about the offense this season, Nagy declined to describe it.
"I would just say wait and see," he said. "I'm not going to get into a whole lot of the scheme part of it."
The Giants host Dallas in the season opener on Sept. 13 at 8:20 p.m. on NBC.
