Overview
Coach John Harbaugh named Jameis Winston the Giants' starting quarterback on Sept. 23, after Jaxson Dart hurt his knee on the opening drive of the Week 2 loss to the Rams and was ruled out for the rest of the regular season. Winston finished that game, going 11 of 27 for 111 yards with an interception in a 28-6 loss.
The Buccaneers drafted Winston first overall in 2015 out of Florida State, where he won the Heisman Trophy as a freshman and led the Seminoles to the 2013 national championship. He played five seasons in Tampa Bay. In 2019 he threw for 5,109 yards, 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, becoming the first player in NFL history to throw at least 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in a season. He spent 2020 through 2023 with the Saints and 2024 with the Browns, where he set the franchise single-game record with 497 passing yards against Denver on Dec. 2, 2024.
The Giants signed him March 31, 2025, as a veteran backup. He made two starts that November while Dart was in the concussion protocol. In the second, a 34-27 overtime loss to Detroit on Nov. 23, 2025, he threw for 366 yards and two touchdowns and caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Gunner Olszewski on a trick play. Giants.com noted he and Matt Ryan are the only players since 1960 with 350 passing yards, two touchdown passes and a touchdown catch in the same game.
Winston signed a two-year extension in early September 2026 that keeps him under contract through 2028. At the time, the Giants said he would again serve as Dart's backup. In his first start of the season, on Sept. 27, he went 14 of 22 for 118 yards without a turnover in a 12-7 win over Tennessee. The Giants traded for quarterback J.J. McCarthy the next day, and Harbaugh said Winston would remain the starter "for as long as I can see into the future."
