Harbaugh's Full Quote on Skattebo's 'Infectious' Energy Is Longer Than What Circulated

Giants coach John Harbaugh's full quote about Cam Skattebo's "infectious" energy is longer than the version that has circulated online since Wednesday's practice scuffle. Skattebo slid near the legs of Newsome and Holland during Wednesday's practice, drawing a 15-yard penalty and public pushback from teammate Jermaine Eluemunor, GiantsGator reported Wednesday. Eluemunor, a Giants right tackle, quote-tweeted Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, who broke the news of the scuffle: "Stop trying to create a BS Narrative."

A reporter asked Harbaugh in his post-practice press conference whether Skattebo's energy is infectious for the team. Here is his full answer, per Giants.com's transcript:

Well, I mean, Skatt's great. He does bring a lot of energy. But he did get a 15-yard penalty at the end of practice. Did you notice that? That's not infectious. Well, it is infectious, actually. Infectious in a bad way, right? Like infectious disease type of thing (laughs). We don't want that. So, we want it to be directed in a positive way.

How Daboll Handled Similar Moments

Harbaugh's answer is a case study in one coaching style: name the incident, describe the penalty, then defuse it with a joke, without ever suggesting Skattebo is a problem. His predecessor, Brian Daboll, took a different approach to comparable moments over his three and a half seasons as Giants coach, relying on deflection rather than humor.

In September 2025, Fox's broadcast cameras caught receiver Malik Nabers in an animated sideline exchange with Daboll during a Week 1 loss to the Commanders. Asked about it afterward, Daboll did not describe what was said or make light of it. He called it "two competitive people understanding that where we are at right now, or offensively, is not where we want to be," per Giants.com's transcript of his postgame press conference. Nabers gave more detail than his coach did, saying he felt "the energy wasn't right" and that he wanted to "speak up."

A sharper test came in October 2025, after outside linebacker Brian Burns was filmed yelling in the tunnel following a 33-32 collapse at Denver in which the Giants blew a 19-point lead. Burns was upset the defense had rushed three and dropped eight into coverage on the game-deciding drive, CBS Sports reported. At his next press conference, a reporter asked Daboll point-blank whether it concerned him that players were publicly questioning coordinator Shane Bowen's call. Daboll gave a version of the same non-answer four separate times, saying "there are plenty of plays that we had opportunities to make" and that "it's not about one play... it's a collective," according to Giants.com's transcript. He never named Burns or characterized his conduct.

Daboll's most extended standoff with a public conflict involved his own coaching staff. Reports surfaced in November 2023 that his relationship with defensive coordinator Wink Martindale had deteriorated. Asked about it, Daboll cut the questions off: "I'm done with that. I addressed what I said last night, and I'm going to leave it at what I said last night," he said, offering only a dry aside when asked why he'd given Martindale a game ball that week: "We had donuts," per a transcript published by Sports Illustrated's Giants site. Two months later, after the Giants dismissed two assistants close to Martindale, the coordinator "cursed out Daboll, said his piece, got up, slammed the door and walked out of the building," the New York Post reported. Martindale left the team within days and was not retained.

Harbaugh's Wednesday answer split the difference between those two extremes: he named Skattebo, described the specific infraction and turned it into a joke instead of pretending nothing happened. Daboll's pattern with Nabers, Burns and Martindale ran the opposite way -- acknowledge as little as possible in public and move on. The Giants fired Daboll on Nov. 10, 2025, at 2-8, and hired Harbaugh on Jan. 17, 2026.

Neither Holland nor Newsome has commented publicly on Wednesday's scuffle. The Giants play their preseason finale Friday against the Jets. Roster cuts to 53 players are due by 6 p.m. ET Sunday.
