Cam Skattebo, Giants Defensive Backs Scuffle at Wednesday Practice
Skattebo slid near the legs of Greg Newsome II and Jevon Holland during Wednesday's practice, setting off a scuffle that drew a 15-yard penalty and a public pushback from teammate Jermaine Eluemunor.
Cam Skattebo scuffled with Giants defensive backs Greg Newsome II and Jevon Holland at Wednesday's practice, an incident that drew a 15-yard penalty and a public pushback from teammate Jermaine Eluemunor.
What happened at Giants practice Wednesday
Skattebo slid after a reception and came close to hitting the legs of Giants defensive backs, who are not permitted to tackle in practice, according to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. Newsome and Holland reacted, and the situation escalated specifically between Skattebo and Newsome, Leonard reported. SNY's Connor Hughes added that Skattebo had been trash-talking the secondary for most of the summer.
The New York Post's Ryan Dunleavy, reporting from the scene, wrote that no punches were thrown. Skattebo and the defensive backs had to be separated, and edge rusher Brian Burns was in coach John Harbaugh's ear after the whistle, Dunleavy reported. Skattebo later crossed to the defensive sideline, appearing to make peace.
Harbaugh calls it a penalty, not a fight
Asked about it in his post-practice press conference, Harbaugh confirmed Skattebo drew a 15-yard penalty on the play and made an extended joke about the word "infectious," telling reporters he wants that competitive energy "directed in a positive way," per the Post. He did not use the word "fight" or otherwise characterize the incident beyond the penalty.
Eluemunor pushes back
Giants right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor quote-tweeted Leonard's original post Wednesday afternoon: "Stop trying to create a BS Narrative." Eluemunor did not say what specifically he was disputing, and he was not part of the group of defensive backs involved in the scuffle.
Neither Holland nor Newsome has commented publicly on Wednesday's scuffle. The Giants play their final preseason game Friday against the Jets. Final roster cuts to 53 players are due by 6 p.m. ET Sunday.
