Nagy will call plays from the box for Giants' season opener
The offensive coordinator said it's his first time doing so in that role, after testing it in the preseason.
Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said Wednesday he will call plays from the coaching box, not the sideline, when the Giants host the Dallas Cowboys in Sunday night's season opener.
"I am, yeah. I'm going to be up in the box," Nagy told reporters, according to a Giants.com transcript of his Sept. 9 media availability.
Nagy said it's the first time he has worked from the box as a play-caller. He spent one season in the box earlier in his career as a quality-control coach, before he was calling plays. He tested the box move during the Giants' preseason games this summer before deciding to do it for the regular season.
"I wanted to experiment with that in the preseason, and I was able to do that. I really liked it. You can see a lot more from up there," Nagy said.
He said the move costs him some in-person communication with players on the sideline but that he still has "the ultimate trust" in his staff to relay what they see, plus a phone line to quarterback Jaxson Dart if needed.
The Giants host the Cowboys at MetLife Stadium at 8:20 p.m. Sunday on NBC.
