Sean McVay said the Rams thought the knee was something Myles Garrett could manage through the season. He played Week 1 and is now set for surgery. The move to injured reserve still has not been filed.

Myles Garrett missed the majority of the Rams' training camp with swelling in his knee, and the team believed it was something he could manage through the season, coach Sean McVay said. "And that wasn't necessarily the case," McVay said.

McVay's remarks appeared Monday in an injury update on the Rams' website written by Stu Jackson, a senior staff writer employed by the team.

The Rams listed Garrett with a knee injury on their Week 1 injury report. He did not practice Tuesday, was a full participant Wednesday and Thursday and was given no game-status designation.

Garrett said after the game that the knee was painful. Asked what his focus was, he named the Giants game. "Getting healthy," he said. "That's the main thing."

McVay said Garrett is having knee surgery and will be placed on injured reserve, which would rule him out against the Giants on Monday night. NFL Network reported the plan before the Rams confirmed it. Garrett played 62 percent of the defensive snaps in the Rams' 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia.

The Rams had not filed the move as of 10:21 a.m. Tuesday. The newest entry on the team's transactions page was dated Sept. 10.
