Giants Releasing Odell Beckham Jr., Signing Braxton Berrios to 53-Man Roster, Reports Say
Beckham was targeted once without a catch in three games back with the Giants. Berrios, a returner who has used all three of his practice-squad elevations, is set to take the roster spot.
The New York Giants are releasing wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. three games into his return to the team that drafted him, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday.
The Giants are signing receiver and returner Braxton Berrios from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. ESPN's Jordan Raanan reported that Berrios is taking the spot opened by Beckham's release and that Beckham will not join the practice squad for now.
The team had not announced either move as of Tuesday afternoon.
Beckham, 33, was targeted once in three games and did not catch a pass. The target came in Sunday's 12-7 win over Tennessee. He played 20 offensive snaps by Pro Football Reference's count, 19 by Next Gen Stats', and did not play on special teams.
He made the initial 53-man roster after signing a one-year, $1.3 million contract June 1. The deal carried no guaranteed money and a $1,075,000 cap charge under the veteran salary benefit. Beckham caught 390 passes for the Giants from 2014 to 2018.
Berrios, 30, was elevated from the practice squad for each of the first three games. That is the most times a player can be elevated in a season, so the Giants had to sign him to the active roster for him to play Sunday against Arizona. He has played 22 offensive snaps and 21 special-teams snaps.
With the moves, Berrios joins Malik Nabers, Darnell Mooney and rookie Malachi Fields as the Giants' active receivers. Calvin Austin III and Gunner Olszewski are on injured reserve.
