Giants Name Golston, Thomas, Burns and Stout Game Captains for Cowboys Opener

Head coach John Harbaugh said the weekly pick, made by the coaching staff, is a separate process from the season-long leadership council the Giants named in August.

The Giants have named defensive lineman Chauncey Golston, left tackle Andrew Thomas, linebacker Brian Burns and punter Jordan Stout as game captains for Sunday night's season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach John Harbaugh said in a Giants.com "Harbs Weekly" Q&A with Dan Salomone published Sept. 11. Kickoff at MetLife Stadium is 8:20 p.m. on NBC.

Golston is not on the Giants' eight-player leadership council. "This week, Chauncey [Golston] is on there," Harbaugh said. "He's not on the leadership council, but he's a game captain (along with Andrew Thomas, Brian Burns and Jordan Stout). And you'll see a bunch of guys who aren't on the leadership council that'll be game captains."

Harbaugh also explained how the weekly captains are picked: "The coaches pick. Not all me. It's the coaches' pick. I'll go to the defensive, offensive and special teams coaches, but I get veto power." He said the choices are unveiled at the team's Wednesday meeting, when a photo goes up on the screen and the players cheer.

GiantsGator reported Aug. 25 that Harbaugh had installed an eight-player leadership councilJaxson Dart, Thomas, Jameis Winston, Burns, Chris Manhertz, Tremaine Edmunds, Stout and Jevón Holland — as the team's season-long captains, a group elected by teammates. That story noted the Giants had not yet named game-day captains separately.
