Harbaugh Names Jameis Winston Giants' Starting QB, Calls It a 'Lane Change' on Offense
Winston, who signed a two-year extension five days before the opener, replaces the regular-season-ending Jaxson Dart; Harbaugh told giants.com the team is exploring adding a quarterback to the roster.
John Harbaugh told giants.com Tuesday that Jameis Winston will start at quarterback for the Giants for the rest of the season, with Jaxson Dart sidelined by the knee injury he suffered in Monday night's loss to the Rams.
Winston, who signed a two-year contract extension five days before the season opener, has started 89 of his 109 career regular-season games across 12 seasons with four teams.
"It's more of a lane change as opposed to changing direction," Harbaugh told giants.com in a Tuesday press availability, adding that every play currently in the game plan remains available to Winston.
Asked whether the Giants could advance past the regular season without Dart, Harbaugh pointed back to his own framing of the injury as regular-season-ending: "I think I said it, yeah. I said it — regular season. Other than that, how do you know? There's no way to know." He gave no recovery timetable.
Jake Haener, on the practice squad, is the only other quarterback on the roster. Harbaugh told giants.com the team is exploring adding a quarterback to the roster. The Giants (1-1) host the Titans (0-2) Sunday at 1 p.m. at MetLife Stadium.
