Duggan: Open Giants Roster Spot Likely Won't Go to QB Jake Haener
The Athletic's Dan Duggan says Braxton Berrios or Malik Harrison will get the spot instead, based on his belief the Giants plan to add a new backup quarterback soon.
The Giants have one open spot on their 53-man roster and two practice-squad elevation slots to fill before Sunday's game against the Titans, The Athletic's Dan Duggan reported on X Saturday morning.
Duggan named three practice-squad players in line for those spots: QB Jake Haener, WR Braxton Berrios and OLB Malik Harrison. Berrios and Harrison have each been elevated from the practice squad twice this season, on Sept. 12 and Sept. 21, according to the team's official transaction log. Duggan noted that two elevations is the maximum a player can receive before he must be signed to the 53-man roster to keep playing.
Duggan said he expects the Giants to sign one of Berrios or Harrison to the 53-man roster Saturday and repeat the move with the other next week, rather than add Haener. He attributed his guess to a belief that the Giants plan to bring in a new backup quarterback soon.
Duggan's report had not been corroborated by another outlet, and no transaction had posted to the Giants' official log or been noted in the team's own reporting as of Saturday afternoon. The team's most recent transaction remained Thursday's move placing QB Jaxson Dart on injured reserve.
