Nagy Details How the Offense Changes Around Winston
The offensive coordinator said the Giants cut pre-snap motion for Jameis Winston's relief stint and will now build the game plan around his arm instead of Jaxson Dart's legs.
Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said Thursday the team eliminated or reduced pre-snap motion and shifts to help quarterback Jameis Winston process plays faster during his relief appearance in Week 2, after Jaxson Dart left with a season-ending knee injury.
"If there's a motion and a shift in a play, we either eliminated it or we used one motion, not two," Nagy said, according to a giants.com transcript of his Thursday press conference. "If there's something on the play where we could make it easier for him to play faster and have less decisions, we wanted to do that."
Nagy said the offense will now be designed around Winston's strengths rather than Dart's ability to run, which he called "one of his strengths" and "part of the playbook."
"Now we get a chance to design around Jameis' strengths and what he does," Nagy said.
Asked directly whether the Giants lose something with Dart out, Nagy acknowledged they do.
"There's a part of the playbook that we do lose any way you look at it," he said. "But it's not a massive number to where you can't run an offense."
Big Blue View was first to report on the remarks Friday. The Giants named Winston their starter for the rest of the season Wednesday. He starts Sunday against Tennessee.
