Harbaugh Thinks Andrew Thomas Will Be Fine, Calls Tyrone Tracy Jr. Day-to-Day After Both Miss Practice
J.J. McCarthy practiced with the Giants on Wednesday, and Harbaugh said Jaxson Dart's knee surgery went well.
Left tackle Andrew Thomas (groin) and running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (knee) did not practice Wednesday as the Giants opened preparation for the Arizona Cardinals. Coach John Harbaugh said at his Wednesday news conference he thinks Thomas will be fine. He called Tracy day-to-day and said he did not think the injury was serious.
Linebacker Malik Harrison (groin) also did not practice, the team's first injury report of the week showed. Cornerback Deonte Banks and safety Tyler Nubin, both with calf injuries, were limited. Defensive back Elijah Campbell (foot), cornerback Nic Jones (shoulder) and fullback Patrick Ricard (nose) practiced fully.
J.J. McCarthy, acquired from Minnesota Monday for a 2027 fifth-round pick, practiced with his new team. "He had a really good practice," Harbaugh said, adding that McCarthy picked up what the coaches asked of him.
Jameis Winston and McCarthy are the only quarterbacks on the active roster, and the practice squad has none. Jake Haener, waived Monday, is on neither list. The Giants' trade announcement still said Wednesday that the deal is pending a physical, while the team's transaction page lists McCarthy as acquired.
Harbaugh said doctors told him Jaxson Dart's knee surgery went well and that the recovery timeline has not changed much. Asked about Dart returning for the playoffs, he said that might be ambitious.
With Brian Burns on injured reserve after tearing his ACL, Harbaugh said rookie linebacker Arvell Reese can be moved around and has already played on the edge this season. He said rookie cornerback Colton Hood has improved each game and predicted Hood would play better Sunday.
On Tuesday's release of Odell Beckham Jr., Harbaugh said, "It wasn't working for us." He said not getting Beckham on the field more was on the team, not on Beckham.
The Giants (2-1) host the Cardinals (1-2) at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. ET.
